Advent 2014

A Path to Peace: Four Spiritual Words

Repentance. . . .Forgiveness. . . .Righteousness. . . . Humility

Synopsis: In the midst of terrorists spreading their evil, the Ebola epidemic, mixed economic news and fear-mongering pundits, it is extremely difficult to believe that God exists much less that his reign is immanent.  Yet precisely this belief will lead us to an encounter with Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

First Sunday of Advent ~ Sunday, November 30

Pastor Tom will be out of worship that morning, Don Williams, A Certified Lay Servant of the Grand Rapids District will present the first of our Advent Lessons.

Isaiah 64:1-9

We can’t control events that engender bad news. We can with God’s help control our response.

Unfortunately our tendency is to react with fear and thus make matters seem worse than they are.

This intensifies our fear which makes it even more difficult to function well which intensifies our fear even more.  The only way to interrupt this vicious cycle is to stop and think critically.

The spiritual word for this process is repentance.

Second Sunday of Advent ~ Sunday, December 7

Our Children’s Sunday School presents “The Littlest Angel Choir”

Isaiah 40:1-11

When the cycle of fear and reactivity is interrupted and we critically assess our situation we are ready to engage our spiritual resources.  Now we discover that God is ready willing and able to restore our sanity.  The spiritual word for this process is forgiveness.

Third Sunday of Advent ~ Sunday, December 14

Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11

Fear is the very core of self-centeredness.  Those who with God’s help have put fear in its proper perspective, are ready to act on behalf of others.  We act justly.   We become agents of transformation.  The spiritual word for this is righteousness and its fruit is joy.

Fourth Sunday of Advent ~ Sunday, December 21

II Samuel 7:1-11, 16

Nothing succeeds like success and spiritually speaking, nothing will derail us quicker than success.  Success can be a seductive siren leading us to believe our own effort alone brought us here.  We need to remember God created us in God’s image not the other way around. The spiritual word for this perspective is humility.
